An antique Islamic straight sword from the Qajar Revival. This style of Persian weapon is based on Sassanid designs from the birth of Islam and was brought back by the Qajar tribe to appear more legitimate as the rightful rulers of Persia. It features a broad steel blade and a hilt combining many pieces brazed together with brass. These straight swords were produced for a short time in fewer quantities than other sword designs and this particular example also displays and even more scarce silver decorated hilt. The steel blade is flanked by two dragon head quillions that protect the blade and show the wielder has mastered the dragons. The full length inscription of Quranic verses in Mohaqqaq Islamic calligraphy on both sides of the blade is what makes this a work of art.
