Description
These six scenes were hand painted upon thin slivers of camel bone, cut into rectangles that measure 2.25 inches by 3.25 inches. Each panel was created by the same artist and they tell a story.
This is an estate find and I don't know the age of the work, but Persian miniature painting has been a significant artistic genre since the Mongol conquests of the 13th century and this is a nice example of the genre.
The paintings are heightened with pure gold accents-- an old tradition of the style, so I think these date to the 19th or early 20th century.
The bright, pure coloring is the result of the use of natural mineral-based pigments which keep their colors very well.
Animals are shown in profile while human figures are mainly shown in three quarter view. The dress of the figures and details of the background are shown with great care.
Figures are all rendered the same size, and depth is indicated by placing more distant figures higher in the space.
These 6 panels have been well framed, placed upon a rib textured fabric background and under glass in a gilt frame.
The frame is about 8 by 13.5 inches and about 3/4 inch deep.
